Abstract: The early Tamil poetry known in literary tradition as Sangam literature are traditionally divided into two broad poetic themes – akam and puram. A range of conventions is associated with these poetic categories in the corpus. Dravidian Etymological Dictionary ascribes the meaning for akam as inside, house, place, agricultural tract, breast, and mind and for puram as outside, exterior.
