Abstract

Nineteenth century Bengal was a period of great intellectual ferment and social awareness. It was also a period of contradictions. On the one hand it was witness to the reform movements initiated by Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar and Raja Rammohan Roy and on the other there was the opposition to widow remarriage by Radha Kanta Deb, the leader of orthodox society in Calcutta.
