Abstract: Although the Indian society has for centuries been one of the most hierarchical among the known civilizations with a clear gradation in the exercise of power and privilege, the literatures of this country, until very recently, have never focused on this problem of inequality. The pen has by and large been in the hands of those who wielded power, and those outside the grid of authority and agency have generally been rendered invisible in the canonized literary texts of India.
