Abstract: | This is an attempt to explore and understand the contours of the conceptual universe of the authors of the Puranas regarding what they perceived as history. Till quite recently, it was accepted as a truism that the ancient Indians had no sense of, or interest in, history. Various explanations of this 'deficiency' were also offered; the most persistent being the one that Indian outlook in its philosophical and psychological makeup was anti-historical.
