Abstract: Studies on ·human representational systems, linguistic or cognitive, though often caught up in universalist themes, have always ultimately opened up to the question of cultural specificities. Laying aside the classical perspectives, and viewing the problem primarily from the point of view of linguistics in the modern era, we can discern certain key stages where the interrelationship between language, culture, and cognition has been taken up for particular enquiry.
