Abstract: From the 'Buranjis', that is, historical chronicles maintained from an early period in the courts of the Ahom kings of Assam, as well as from the Vaishnavic litierature of the sixteenth century and downwards it is clear that the terms 'asam', 'asam' and 'axam' were used to denote the people who are to-day known as 'Ahom'.
