Abstract: | When the dawn of independence came for India in 1947 the biggest political question was whether the Rulers of the Indian States would make the supreme sacrifice and immolate their States at the altar of national unity. An India deprived of the Indian States would have lost all coherence, since the States formed a great cruciform barrier separating all four quarters of the country. |
