The severe drought of 1895 and the disastrous harvest of 1921 in Russia caused a national calamity. Wheat yield was reduced by about 75',00,00,00 bu, in Canada during 1930-34. The recurrence of this natural calamity in our country in past up-set the Governmental plans to make it self-sufficient to feed its population. Breeding and selection of drought resistant variety, inducing resistance to drought and study of the basis of drought resistance are some of the major problems needing investigation in this connection.en_US
