CIVILIZED society today depends, in every material sense, on abundant supplies of the petroleum products; and as to these it is well known that the eastern hemisphere must now (and, to all appearances, henceforward) depend on its own supplies, because the Americas need all or almost all that they produce, and indeed are already taking considerable quantities from the east.
