Abstract: By the close of the eighteenth century Iran had endured a series of political upheavals which seemed to foreshadow the disintegration of the Iranian state. During the long and tragic reign of Shah Sultan Husayn (1694-1722) the Safavi dynasty tottered helplessly towards its downfall, while Russia and Ottoman Turkey waited to feed upon the carrion.
