Abstract

:engal "a society of mixed race, of immemorial age, and of highly complex structure; but the Government in Bengal, as in other Provinces of the Mogul Empire, was falling into decay with the collapse of that rule. Into this complex organism, at a critical time, the foreign body of the English East India Company had intruded itself. It had set up an irritation whlch the ,native Governors of Bengal and the Directors of the Company in England were alike impotent to allay.
