We visited India, at the invitation of the Indian Council for Social Science Research, for a period of three weeks in November and early December 1970.* The time was short and the resulting view of the Indian social science scene was necessarily impressionistic. But -we had the advantage of ample documentation on a number of aspects of our topic prior to our visit, as well as a wide range of personal contacts extending over . a period of years with individual Indian social scientists.-
